If you need a server — to run an application, host a service, or support a project — ITS can provision a virtual machine for you. A virtual machine behaves just like a physical server but runs in the cloud or on ITS-managed hardware, so there’s no equipment to procure or rack. Most VMs are provisioned in AWS, though on-premises options are available depending on the use case — see Data Center for more about URI’s physical infrastructure.
To request a VM or discuss your requirements, contact its-citi@uri.edu.

Features
- Standard operating systems are Windows Server and Amazon Linux
- Other Linux distributions available on AWS may be possible — contact us to discuss
- Scalable — CPU, memory, and storage can be resized as needs change
- No hardware procurement or physical setup required
- Cloud-hosted (AWS) or on-premises depending on use case
- OS updates and infrastructure maintenance handled by ITS by default
- Covered by standard ITS backup policies
Access
Virtual machines are available to URI faculty, staff, and departments. To request one, email its-citi@uri.edu with a description of what you need — including the intended application, preferred operating system, and expected usage. ITS will follow up to discuss options and next steps.
- Windows Server VMs are accessed via RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
- Linux VMs are accessed via SSH
Support and Training
ITS manages the underlying VM infrastructure, including OS updates and routine maintenance. Support is generally limited to OS patching and ensuring the server is functioning — ITS is not able to assist with server administration tasks beyond that, and cannot provide support for applications running on the server. This includes training: ITS cannot provide instruction on how to administer or use a Windows or Linux server.
If your server needs to be accessible via a URI web address with HTTPS, see Application Proxy.
For questions, to request a VM, or to discuss whether a virtual machine is the right fit for your needs — including OS selection or alternative hosting options — contact its-citi@uri.edu.
