Kiro is an AI-powered development environment from Amazon Web Services (AWS) that helps you plan, build, test, and document software using AI-assisted development tools.

Kiro is currently available at URI through limited programs for eligible faculty and students. Access, eligibility, and support vary by program.

Features

  • Spec-driven development: Turn an idea or prompt into structured requirements, system designs, and development tasks before beginning implementation.
  • AI-assisted development: Use AI agents to help write and modify code, complete development tasks, and work through a project.
  • Agent steering: Give Kiro project-specific context, standards, and conventions so its agents can follow established development practices.
  • Agent hooks: Automate tasks such as generating documentation and unit tests when specific events occur.
  • External integrations: Connect Kiro with documentation, databases, APIs, and other tools using Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.
  • Checkpointing: Return to earlier points in your work, making it easier to explore different approaches and reverse changes.
  • Multiple ways to work: Use Kiro through its integrated development environment (IDE) or command-line interface (CLI).

Note: Kiro is currently being evaluated as a pilot service at URI. Features and availability may change during or after the pilot.

Access

Faculty pilot

Approved faculty pilot participants access Kiro through URI’s AWS environment using their URI account.

Once you have been approved for the pilot, follow the instructions in How to install Kiro and sign in with your URI account to get started.

The faculty pilot is being provided at no cost and has limited support. Access and availability may change during or after the pilot.

Kiro for students

Currently enrolled URI students are eligible for the Kiro for Students program from AWS, which provides 1,000 free credits per month for up to 12 months.

Get Kiro for Students

Student access is provided directly through the Kiro for Students program and does not use the URI AWS sign-in process described in the faculty installation instructions.

Faculty pilot

Dedicated technical support is not available for the faculty pilot. Faculty can connect with other pilot participants and use the self-paced Kiro training and documentation resources below.

Kiro for students

AWS provides support for the Kiro for Students program:

  • Verification problems: Contact SheerID Support for eligibility verification or document-upload problems.
  • Kiro account or platform problems: After signing in, use Kiro Billing and Account Support for account access, credit usage, and related Kiro issues.
