DNS Domain Name System

Domain names — like uri.edu — need to be translated into IP addresses before computers can connect to them. DNS handles that translation invisibly in the background, and most people never need to think about it.

ITS manages DNS across URI’s on-premises infrastructure, AWS, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The most common reason someone ends up needing DNS is because a developer, vendor, or system administrator told them a DNS record needs to be created or changed — for example, to point a new domain to a server, set up a new website, or configure email authentication. If that’s you, contact its-citi@uri.edu and we’ll take care of it.

Features

  • Authoritative DNS management for all URI zones, including uri.edu and related domains
  • DNS managed across on-premises infrastructure, AWS, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
  • Supports all common record types — A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, and more
  • Email authentication records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)
  • Internal and external DNS resolution

Access

Available to URI departments, developers, system administrators, and vendors working on URI systems. Most users never need to interact with DNS directly — the most common reason to contact us is because a developer, vendor, or system told you that a DNS record needs to be created or changed.

To request a DNS change, contact its-citi@uri.edu with the record details — hostname, record type, and value — and we’ll take care of it.

Support and Training

ITS handles all DNS record creation, modification, and deletion — there is no self-managed DNS portal. Changes are typically straightforward and quick to process.

For questions or to request a change, contact its-citi@uri.edu.

Core Networking with image of lan cable and wifi signal

URI’s networking infrastructure delivers wired and wireless access to nearly every space on all campuses. Core Networking encompasses the central network switches, inter-building connections, and internet connectivity that support a wide range of devices. These devices, or end points, include computers, printers, facility systems, cell phones, gaming devices, wireless access points, and telephones, ensuring robust connectivity for all users.

If you suspect a service interruption more extensive than your local device please contact the ITS Service Desk for assistance.
