As of June 29, IT Contract Review services have transitioned from IT Services to the Office of Strategic Procurement under the newly established Director of Contracts Management role. John Brindamour, who previously managed IT contract reviews within ITS, has moved to Strategic Procurement to lead this expanded function.

What This Means for You:

  • The IT contract review process will continue to function as usual
  • All current contact methods remain active
  • Over time, this transition will enable more integrated and streamlined contract processes university-wide

The ServiceNow request form and all associated processes remain unchanged. We appreciate your patience during this organizational transition as we work toward an enhanced contract management approach for URI.

Recent news about a legal decision involving The New York Times and OpenAI offers a timely reminder for all of us: be intentional with the information you share when using artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT.

The New York Times recently secured a court order requiring OpenAI to retain ChatGPT logs that users had deleted. While this legal outcome is unlikely to significantly change the broader AI safety landscape, it underscores a critical point: What you enter into AI platforms may not be fully erasable.

What Does This Mean for You?
When using AI tools:

  • Avoid entering sensitive or confidential information unless you are confident it is safe and appropriate to do so.
  • Assume persistence: Even if a platform offers deletion options, there may be circumstances where the data is retained or recoverable.
  • Stay informed about your organization’s guidance, privacy policies, and best practices when using generative AI tools in your work or studies.

ITS Research Computing continues to play a vital role in supporting Rhode Island’s coastal communities through powerful, research-driven tools. Recent state funding will ensure the continued operation of three critical programs at URI:

  • CHAMP (Coastal Hazard Analysis Modeling Program)
  • StormTools (Coastal flooding visualization and planning tools)
  • MyCoast (A public platform for sharing storm and tide impacts)

These programs are essential for improving coastal resilience and emergency preparedness. CHAMP, in particular, relies heavily on ITS Research Computing’s infrastructure and services to deliver accurate, high-performance modeling and data processing.

This funding reflects URI’s leadership in applying computational research to real-world challenges—and highlights the value of strong infrastructure support for impactful science.
