Provide a secure, reliable, efficient, and modern computing infrastructure.

URI IT needs to provide our constituents with secure, reliable, efficient, and modern infrastructure services. These infrastructure components include stable and reliable networks, secure and standards-compliant computing and data storage, uniform and common A/V systems, properly configured and resilient server systems, and many others. These foundational elements of IT infrastructure underpin and support every aspect of FOCUS URI.

Goal 1

Develop and deploy a modern network with adequate bandwidth and security for URI.

  • Address the deferred maintenance and self-funding needed to address inadequate WiFi coverage.
  • Address aging building wiring and badly out-of-date network switching equipment caused by past deferred maintenance practices.
  • Develop and implement a sustainable funding model for future maintenance needs and required network enhancements.

Goal 2

Proactively enhance cyber security

  • Build a secured research environment for both existing “unsecured” research instrumentation and enhanced-privilege environments.
  • Build a complete support structure to provide compliance-based standard storage and computing, including HIPAA, FERPA, NIST 800, and GLBA systems.
  • Create a cloud space for secure interactions with core data systems.
  • Implement an identity management system able to automatically adapt entitlements to keep pace with shifting roles.
  • Implement a device x role secure access system for all privileged data access at URI.
  • Implement full log management and scanning capabilities.
  • Build a sustainable funding model and funding source for the cyclic replacement of core security hardware systems.

Goal 3

Provide every employee of URI with adequate equipment to fulfill their job function.

  • Replace all out-of-support endpoints and provision endpoints to those employees who have no endpoint.
  • Build a program of sustained cyclic endpoint replacement.

Goal 4

Deploy adequate A/V infrastructure and support to provide a consistent and usable experience across the URI campus.

  • Improve the GAC classroom user experience through regular maintenance and timely upgrades of classroom audio-visual equipment.
  • Fold all learning spaces on campus into a unified A/V support model.
  • Extend central A/V support to cover both non-classroom spaces and mobile event support and equipment.
